First blog post of 2019, and it’s about a place that I visited just before the new year. The second chapter of Sotally Tober quite literally took a page from its predecessor. Imagine you walked into Wonderland and had one of those ‘Drink Me’ potions that shrunk you down. And then, you look up at these giant hardbound book covers, with a drunken twist. Think – Life of High, Lord of the Rums and Da Whiskey Code, and many more. There’s also Alice in Vodka-land just to bring this around!
Last Sunday of 2018, a bunch of us were invited to the new outlet of #SoTo (as I like to call it), for a tasting of their menu and an experience of the place. Easy to miss if you don’t know what you’re looking for, but once you do, you’re going to know it, even in a vastly inebriated state as well. We walked in, and past the seating area inside with a huge bar, onto the alfresco area. The pages of several vintage dictionaries and thesaurus decoupage on all the walls of this uniquely rendered space. We sat down and started with some signature cocktails. Tapash picked the Wisemen’s Sour is their twist on the classic sour, very nice. I had the Organic Caipiroska – with vanilla vodka and topped with jaggery, yum!
About food, So To aces their appetizers. Mushroom on Toast had stir fried mushrooms, shallots & garlic sautéed in white wine, and we loved it! The Chicken Lollypop had a Bengali twist to it – with fried chicken lollipop, sautéed in a gin infused creamy mustard sauce. The Chicken Cutlets are another favorite, crumb fried minced chicken patties – you just can’t go wrong with this one!
The #SoTo Tandoori Jhinga is something we got several repeats of – tandoor cooked, spice & rum marinated prawns – oh so good! The Pork Belly was a tad too sweet for my taste, but the Malabar Tenderloin Fry was a work of perfection. The spices, the grated coconut, just aces! We requested for some kerala paratha, and that went beautifully with this. We had no space for mains, did try the Rogan Josh, it wasn’t that for sure. The desserts were pretty nice too.
The Last Word
We tried quite a few cocktails at Sotally Tober, and liked most of them. The infusions are made inhouse and give the cocktail quite a different take. The appetizer selection is outstanding, and the pricing is great too. I am definitely going to go back, because there’s so much more to try. Maybe in the evenings, the vibe is bound to be very different. A total thumbs-up place!
