A blog post after quite a break, and it had to be something food and festive! It’s Onam time, and the festivities are already in the air! It’s been tough in 2021 with the onslaught of the second wave, but celebrations & food has an almost invisible healing touch. For the uninitiated Onam is the harvest festival in Kerala, celebrated by Malayalees in Kerala and everywhere! It commemorates the return of a mythical king – King Mahabali and brings together communities across the landscape in a beautiful unified revelry. The legend has quite a few origin stories for this festival – but this one by far is the most popular! Households and businesses are decorated with exquisitely detailed beautiful Pookkalam.
And because no festivity is every complete without food, there’s elaborate sumptuous Onam Sadhya (also spelt Sadya) served, a vegetarian feast that reflects the spirit of the season, served on plantain leaves, and has close to two dozen dishes, sometimes more, ending with one or more varieties of payasam! This year, there are a few places that are doing Onam Sadhyas – some as take aways, and few for dine in. Here’s a small list to help you choose, we will update this with more! So get set to have an amazing feast with Inji Puli, Kichadis and Pachadi, Pazham, Thoran and so much more!
