This visit to SALT in Forum Mall, Koramangala was long due. But like I say, good things come in its own time, this is very true for our visit as well, because our timing coincided with their Festive Menu promotion. This menu features some new dishes and chef picks from their regular menu – you could say best of both worlds. On Christmas eve 2016, we reached Salt, after catching an early morning show of Dangal – yes we were fully charged up! Chef Bala was around that day, and it was really nice to meet him in person. I have liked the food at SALT ever since I tasted their food at the World On A Plate kiosk, and finally we met the man behind the menu. He recommended a few dishes which gradually formed our courses.
We started with the lemon coriander with turkey soup. Deliciously invigorating, this is usually a peppy soup. With the turkey, this had a whole new character – the meat was slightly rough, adding more relish to the soup. Three starters followed. Zafrani Malai Jhinga came right off the tandoor, and the succulent texture of the prawns were delicious to eat. This dish comes with option of Tiger Prawns or Jumbo Prawns. The Santa Banta Pomfret Fish Fry was perhaps the most interesting dish of the afternoon – black pomfret on tawa mixed with crab meat masala – if you’re a sea food lover, you have got to try this one! The Tangri Kabab that followed was marinated and prepared with Panch Phoron and chilies, very nice and juicy. The quality of the meat and sea food was really good, fresh and delicious.
The mains were quite an assortment. We tried some of the vegetarian specials on the menu. The Paneer Kofta Dilkush is my recommendation if you like paneer – the rich saffron cream gravy with koftas was absolutely delightful. The Subzi Ki Jugalbandi is another dish that was very nice – loaded with beans, broccoli, peppers and more, a good accompaniment with breads or pulao. I loved the Veal Coconut Fry that came next, with the Turkey Biryani – spicy, Kerala styled beef, really well made. The Biryani itself was quite interesting – and again, the turkey was cooked very, very well, making it soft.
There’s a whole set of winter desserts on the menu like cheese cake, jamun brulee, apple strudel and more. If you’re looking for a great way to end 2016, and eat your way into the New Year ’17, head to SALT to experience this fun new menu, available until 2nd Jan.
