Hoppipola opened up a new outlet a couple of months back, and I recently visited the place for a tasting. The Kalyan Nagar area has a lot of new and interesting places for food and drinks, and Hoppi is a good addition to this locality, situated on the top floor of the Mainland China and Sigree building. Hoppipola is part of the Specialty Restaurants chain, and is also there in Kolkata, Pune and Mumbai – and is a new age party place. This outlet is nice and airy, with a lot of board games and activities, and walls decorated with colorful retro telephones – it’s quite a hotchpotch but looks cute. The menu is quite exhaustive, lots of options in food and drinks, shareable portions and some very good signature offerings.
The Hoppi Specials in drinks looked very interesting, we ordered a Bird Cage to start off with, and a Desi Martini because it sounded fun. The Bird Cage is elaborate, probably a tad bit over the top on presentation, but who cares. A fruity white rum concoction, with pineapple chunks, kiwi, pomegranate – it’s 1Litre in a bucket, and takes a while to drink! The Desi Martini on the other hand was an absolute bad ass – vodka and spice mix of coriander, red chili – packed a delicious punch. The pepper prawns and potato wedges are great bar food, fresh and fried. Loved biting into those amidst the music and conversations. The Hot Chick was a spicy Indian Chinese dish, like a chili chicken – quite nice to bite into. The Lamborghini on the other hand was quite not what we expected. The lamb kafta with cheese was too washed out, and really lacked the flavor.
Later into the evening, we tried a few of the other martinis and caipiroshkas – Hoppipola has some pretty interesting flavors, and the menu has the Tipplers Believe It or Not facts, which we were sometimes reading while playing the board games there. The music got groovy into the evening, and the place looks quite nice to hang out in, and the crowd gets in past 8pm. The dessert selection definitely could be expanded, the fudge block classic brownie was good, but the banoffie pie wasn’t the best paired with toffee sauce, sort of weighed it down.
Hoppipola is a new pretty hangout in Kalyan Nagar that has a good drinking menu. The pricing is affordable, and the shareable drinks are perfect for groups. The service is good and helpful, and ladies get a chance to win free shots in a telephone box game! A great new place, definitely worth a try.
