This is the year of the Fiery Monkey on the Chinese calendar, and The Fatty Bao is celebrating with a special menu of food and drinks curated by Chef Prashanth exclusively available from 8th to 14th February for lunch and dinner. The menu has the traditional New Year celebratory food like Cantonese Sweet and Sour Chicken, Baozis, Jiaozi, Ramen Noodles, a whole Steamed Red Snapper and more, all with the Fatty twist to them. And to pair with these scrumptious selections, there is a selection of some spicy and fiery cocktails. A few of us were invited for a preview of this menu, and it was a long Saturday lunch of conversations, some fun cocktails and exquisite food, amidst the hum drum and buzz of The Fatty Bao. And I love festivals that are food centric. Wait, is there another kind?!
Our meal started that afternoon with the beautifully plated Dragon Sushi. This comes in two variants, of vegetarian and non-vegetarian. The non veg comes with spicy salmon, avocado, crab meat, spicy sauce and tenkasu – giving this a tangy and mild crunchy flavor to this. The veg equivalent was a refreshing mix of avocado, cucumber, pickled carrot and spicy mayo – this was a lovely explosion of flavors, absolutely loved it! Jiaozi were next, and we had chicken and asparagus dumplings, made delicately thinly wrapped with dough. These are perfect to gorge on, they are light and I can never get enough!
My favorite dish came next. The Baozis, typically associated with happiness and strength, these were soft baos stuffed with smoked barbeque pork. But the styling of this dish was the most unique – like the Three Little Pigs with their snouts, and looked totally adorable! And yes, I was the big bad wolf! The spring rolls were nice as well, with variants of lamb for non-vegetarian and mushroom for veg. Noodles is another traditional dish, they symbolize longevity. Aromatic duck broth with soft boiled egg, roasted duck meat, fresh coriander – a completely wholesome dish, soupy, not heavy on the stomach. The red snapper that came next looked extremely saucy on the outside, but it was actually a whole fish steamed with Chinese black vinegar and chilli sauce. The texture of the fish was really good, and the vegetables on the side perfectly complemented it.
The menu has some special cocktails as well, like From Beijing with Love – a very sublime fruit and creamy drink of rum, strawberry and cream, with grape and cranberry juice. A friend had the Dragon Warrior, a spectacular bright yellow drink, raced with rum, triple sec, with pineapple and orange juice and peach. My favorites of the lot. The Sparkling Lantern was also nice, Chandon, Vodka, Litchi and lots of passion fruit. Too fruity, but works. It’s not over without dessert. This special menu has a classic Moon Cake – well their version of strawberry compote, served with the mysterious looking black sesame ice cream. The combination was curious, the sweet filling, the imprint on top of the pastry, with the ice cream – new and different flavors.
This promotion is running till the 14th Feb, and I strongly recommend a visit to have this Fatty Twist Chinese New Year delicacies. A reservation would be a good idea, because they are usually full – The Fatty Bao – Never disappoints!
