I think we can safely say 2020 is not what we had expected. Covid-19 has the world in lockdown, and a significant population affected by this pandemic. And as a direct effect – there is huge economic ramifications and evidence of global recession. Airline, transport and hospitality industry are perhaps the ones most impacted, as countries shut down borders for travel and impose various restrictions.
Currently, all dine in places are shut, and even in hotels only room service is available for in-house guests. Despite the major upheaval that the restaurant industry is going through, a lot of them are still actively helping the community by cooking and serving meals to the needy – either independently, or in collaboration with NGOs. Some restaurants and chains are offering take out as well contact-less deliveries following strict sanitization processes. There are also restaurants managing deliveries from their central kitchens, so the delivery areas are perhaps different from where they are located. So here goes, in no particular order – some of the cities favorite restaurants that are now open for online orders!
1. Smoke House Deli
SHD has been one of my haunts for a good meal, dates or just to hang out for many years now. The food here is deliciously simple, and healthy – they have some of the best salads and breakfast options in town. Their kitchen in Bommanahalli is delivering in nearby areas, and the menu features some of their hot selling dishes like Aglio Olio, SHD Mac and Cheese, Smoked Chicken Burgers and more. They also have smoothies, fresh juices and shakes available. Some of the delivery areas are Koramangala, JP Nagar, BTM, Jayanagar and HSR Layout, check them out on Swiggy and Zomato for ordering in. 2. Magnolia Bakery
Late last year, Bangalore saw the launch of Magnolia Bakery, a chain from New York known for delectable and airy cupcakes. Their offerings are freshly-baked in batches – and cupcakes, cakes, cheesecakes, pies, cookies, brownies and bars and world-famous banana pudding are absolutely amazing! And all of this is now available through online portals SwiggyGo and Dunzo. So, if you’re feeling low, and need some yummy desserts to brighten up your day, check out this bakery for takeaways and home deliveries. Orders are taken between 12 noon and 9 pm. Click here to see the menu.
3. MISU
A vibrant and trendy Asian place, MISU has a pan-Asian with some interesting takes on classic dishes. It’s comfort food, and I personally love the Kung Pao dishes, and the rainbow dumplings here. During the lockdown, MISU is available for delivery on Swiggy and Zomato. The delivery menu has Dynamite Shrimps, Rendang Curry, Pad Thai, Kung Pao (Prawns & Tofu) among various other dishes. MISU has outlets in multiple locations including St.Marks Road and Indiranagar, and is worth checking out if it’s Asian food that you are craving. MISU also has some great ongoing offers, check out their instagram page here.
4. The Pizza Bakery
Well, if you like gourmet pizza, you’re probably already a fan of The Pizza Bakery. When an outlet of this pizzeria opened up in RMZ Eco World, we were super thrilled. And the stuffed garlic breads, sourdough pizzas, and wood fired pizzas topped with chorizos, minced lamb, and some great vegetarian varieties and some delicious cheese – there are choices that will spoil you and indulge your taste buds like never before. Available for delivery around Indiranagar and Bellandur on Zomato and Swiggy.
5. Social
Social has various outlets in the city, each with a curious and eclectic theme, the latest outlet being Indiranagar Social in a repurposed bungalow with a hidden speakeasy. This outlet brought some interesting addition to the menu, like thalis from various parts of the country combining staples, mains and sides into a wholesome Indian meal – in Social style! In this time of social distancing and quarantine, this popular space that brings together work and play into a fun urban hangout adapted as well. Social has also started home deliveries. Enjoy the Social munchies, substantials, signature biryanis and China boxes from the comfort of your home. Social has launched value meals and meal boxes – and these are available from delivery in Koramangala, Jayanagar etc. View menu here.
6. The Oberoi Bengaluru
The Oberoi Bengaluru is offering home delivery in areas around the hotels – curated to experience luxury dining at the comfort of your home, perhaps for the first time ever! There is a special take away menu that includes an assortment of breads, breakfast options, western and Indian selections and some regional specialties. The Coffee Fix:
I especially feel hungry around chai time. Though I don’t really crave chai or coffee much, I am obsessive about snacks. If you need your caffeine fix or need to have coffee to keep functioning through the day, or just need to drink coffee after all that Dalgona on the social media, here are some options to make sure you are your best self! After all, I think we discovered working from home is a different ball game altogether.
Third Wave Coffee Roasters are delivering across the city. You could also order in estate coffee and brew them using pour over or aeropress. Isn’t now a good time to explore your barista side? The cookies and banana walnut cakes are also recommended – because hey you need something to munch on with that coffee. You’ve got Haati Kaapi, bringing a lot of local coffees like bella kaapi, Mysuru kaapi, shunti kaapi and more – from various parts of Karnataka – also available for delivery. Another popular coffee chain and roasters – Blue Tokai also ensures you don’t need to leave home to get good coffee, and they are getting roasted and brewed coffee right to you, so you can be #HomeWithBlueTokai. In Bangalore, they are available in Koramangala and Indiranagar.
For the Chai Lovers:
When it comes to Chai, we have some great places that were already doing deliveries even before Covid-19 and need no introduction. I order in from Chai Point regularly. I love the cute cartons in which they deliver teas, and you could get the flasks in various sizes. The Masala Chai and Ginger Chai are my picks, while my colleagues love the Sulemani. There are some really nice snacks available as well. Another place that offers a lot of variety with tea is Chaayos. They also have homemade snacks like chivda and gur para, as well as tea leaves on sale.
For me, more than these beverages, I love the snacks and munchies. So, a place I often order in from is Samosa Party. The place has over a dozen variety of samosas including egg samosa and butter chicken samosa. But their classic Punjabi Aloo samosa is the savoury that hits all the sweet spots! Another thing I constantly want to eat and is not really available on streets are chaats. Bhartiya Jalpan has a limited menu available for delivery. I hope they will expand to cover more dishes from their menu. For cakes and chocolates, Smoor is also has online ordering, if you’re in a mood to indulge that is!
The Last Word
It is important to consider and constantly be aware of the risks and danger that Covid-19 poses. So please do make sure when you’re stepping out for take away or collecting deliveries, you exercise the highest degree of caution, like washing hands and items whenever you come home. There are many others that purely are delivery places listed on online platforms, and other restaurants that have been operating from cloud/satellite kitchens. This article post is mainly a compilation of some restaurants open for delivery and take away during the crisis that the author is aware of.
