Mahjong Room is a Chinese restaurant, a lovely hideaway at WelcomHotel Bangalore by ITC. The place opened up around April, and the menu covers various the various regions and sub-cuisines from the country. And this week Mahjong Room is hosting Chinese Master Chef Yuanzhong Jia from Shanghai Club, ITC Grand Central, Mumbai for a pop up. Culinary specialist Chef Jia specializes in Hunan and Sichuan cuisines and has a wide knowledge of regional cuisines of Cantonese, Beijing and Shanghai as well. The pop-up menu is actually quite an extensive selection, and we were invited for a preview last week.

Our evening started with an interaction with Chef Dhawal, Executive Chef WelcomHotel and Chef Jia. The chefs had an interesting line up of dishes for our tasting, and I must start with saying it is one of the best Chinese meals ever. The flavors were subtle yet absolutely distinct. Most Chinese meal I have had are similar in terms of sauces, but here – the aromas and the ingredients ensured an epicurean treat that we reveled in.

I am mainly going to list my favorites from the meal, though all the dishes were great. So let’s started with Chilli butter soup with Chicken and move swiftly onto congbao yangrou – Stir-fried sliced Lamb and onions with dark soy – my favorite from the meal! The hunan doufu – deep fried tofu in Chef Jia’s special sauce – again absolutely delectable. The xingreng Chaofan or Almond fried rice was just beautiful. Perfect on its own or with the selection of gravies. The mains had braised meats – chicken and lamb in various sauces. Prawns in Hunan Sauce was excellent, the juicy prawns in the thick spicy sauce. I found the mix vegetables and mix mushroom chili oyster sauce very nicely done as well.

Finer Points

This pop up is available from 19^th to 27^th July, 2019 for lunch & dinner. This was Chinese Cuisine in its true element and legacy, so you really shouldn’t miss it. The pricing at Mahjong Room is extremely competitive, so a meal here is truly a steal. Reservation recommended!
